Oliver Ames, Jr.

Oliver Ames, Jr. was born to Oliver and Elsie Alger Ames on April 8, 1895 to in Boston. He graduated from Harvard College in 1917. Oliver showed his devotion to our country when he entered the Officers' Training Camp in Plattsburg, NY in May 1917. Second Lieutenant (2Lt.) Ames proudly served in the 165th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Division, also known as the Rainbow Division. 2Lt. Ames was the 1st Battalion adjutant under Major "Wild Bill" Donovan. He fought gallantly during the fighting at Meurcy Farm. On July 28, 1918, while voluntarily going through machine-gun fire to assist his battalion commander, 2Lt. Ames was shot and killed by a sniper hiding behind a dead horse. For his extraordinary heroism in action 2Lt. Ames was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His body is buried in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in Fere-en-Tardenois, France. Oliver was survived by his parents.
