Hazardous Waste ImageThe City of Boston hosts two Hazardous Waste drop-off days each year. Events are posted to the City's Public Works website as they are scheduled.

Drop-Off Event Guidelines:

  • For Boston residents only; proof of residency required.
  • No commercial waste accepted.
  • Foot traffic prohibited.
  • City reserves right to reject materials.

May through August, the Public Works Department hosts Saturday paint swap shops for surplus paint, stains, and varnishes. Residents can drop off or pick up paint materials for free.  Residents can also drop off used motor oil.

Guidelines  for Paint Swaps

  • For Boston residents only; proof of residency required.
  • Paint and motor oil are NOT accepted from commercial businesses
  • Paint, stains varnishes, and thinners nots in original containers or with illegal labels won't be accepted
  • No aerosol paint cans accepted
  • There is a 20 container maximum for drop off.

Guidelines for Motor Oil

  • No transmission fluid accepted
  • No anti-free accepted
  • No steering wheel fluid accepted
  • No empty cans
