Middle Income Housing Initiative

This is a new initiative of the City of Boston to support the creation of well-designed new housing for middle income families in Boston’s neighborhoods. Through this initiative, up to one million square feet of City-owned vacant land will be made available to small builders at below market prices in 2013 and 2014. Housing for middle income familiesThis initiative has three core goals: 1) increase the number of middle-income homeowners in Boston’s neighborhoods to offset some of losses that resulted from the foreclosure crisis, 2) support property values in the higher-foreclosure neighborhoods by replacing vacant lots with well-designed homes, and 3) create business opportunities for smaller locally-based contractor-builders to stimulate construction-sector employment.

What role does the local community play in this initiative? Community residents and abutters to the selected sites have a critical role in implementing this initiative. Before putting any properties on the market, the City will meet with local residents and abutters to review the opportunities presented by this initiative. After a mutually-agreeable development plan has been reached, properties will be offered in accordance with that plan.  The City will also bring potential developers to the community to present their designs before the City selects the winning proposal.

How do I become a participating builder?  To participate in this initiative, builders should have a track record of building this type of housing before, preferably in the City of Boston so that you are familiar with the City’s development permitting process. Participating builders will also need to show that they have the financial capacity to complete the project in a timely manner, too. To sign up to be notified electronically of development opportunities, follow this link to the Builders Sign-Up Form that will ensure that you are notified of all community-approved offerings as they happen. For more information about how to participate, follow this link to the Builders Information Page.

What sites are available? The Community Connections Page provides and up-to-date listing of all sites that are underway.
