Through this program, the Boston Home Center contracts with several neighborhood-based agencies to offer eligible seniors 0% interest deferred loans for minor, moderate, and emergency home repairs.
What are the benefits?
- Receive a 0% interest deferred loan to make important improvements to your home
- Additional grants also available to help finance certain projects
- Receive technical assistance from construction specialists
Who is eligible?
- Must be at least 62 years of age
- Must own and occupy a 1-4 family home or condo in Boston
- Must be current on property tax payments
- Must be current on payments to the Boston Water and Sewer Commission
- Must have a household income that does not exceed 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
- If applicant lives in a multi-family building, HUD requires that at least 50% of that building's residents be low or moderate income

What repairs are eligible?
Some examples of interior repairs are:
- Replacing a leaky faucet
- Fixing a clogged drain
- Improvements to a bathroom
- Repair of window cords and sashes
Some examples of exterior repairs are:
- Painting
- Repair or replace a porch
- Repair or replace a roof
- Restore a foundation
- Repair or replace clapboards or vinyl siding
- Replace windows
How do I apply and what happens next?
- Contact the agency that serves your neighborhood and arrange to have your home inspected
Your neighborhood agency will come to your home and conduct a full inspection of necessary repairs. If there are any health or safety concerns, those repairs must take priority.

- Apply for Senior Home Repair funding
Please print and complete the following forms, before returning signed copies to the Boston Home Center.
Based on the inventory of repairs needed, a projected cost will be compiled. Your neighborhood agency will help you secure funding from the Boston Home Center.
- Complete your project
Once you have completed all paperwork to secure your funding, your neighborhood agency will arrange to begin construction for your repair project and assist you until the job is complete.
- Adhere to your loan agreement
You are responsible for paying back your Senior Home Repair loan to the city in accordance with your loan agreement. If you move, sell, refinance or otherwise transfer the property, the loan must be fully repaid at that time.
