The residents of District 8 elected Josh Zakim to the Boston City Council on November 5, 2013. Josh represents the neighborhoods of Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Kenmore Square, Mission Hill, and the West End. He is a Back Bay resident.

Josh’s parents instilled a strong sense of social and economic justice in him and his sisters, Shari and Deena. Josh’s father, Lenny, lived out those values every day in his work throughout Greater Boston by building and growing coalitions among our city’s many diverse groups. Josh brings to the Council this same passion for access and opportunity for all Bostonians.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern University School of Law, Josh was sworn in as a member of the Massachusetts Bar on December 2, 2009. As a new lawyer, Josh went to work at Greater Boston Legal Services, where he represented working families who had been taken advantage of by predatory lenders and were facing the loss of their homes to foreclosure. At GBLS, Josh worked with all levels of government, his clients, and lenders to secure loan modifications that allowed most of these families to remain in their homes.

In 2011, Josh joined the Public Finance group of the law firm Mintz Levin and worked on municipal bond transactions for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, MassPort, and the MBTA. Here, Josh gained an in-depth understanding of how local and state governments operate and fund projects, big and small.

Josh is an active Board Member of the Lenny Zakim Fund, an organization founded by his father and friends nearly 20 years ago. The Fund directs support and provides training to innovative grassroots organizations dedicated to tackling complex social issues like youth violence, adult literacy, and job training. Josh is also an active member of our community, serving as a member or volunteer with the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committee, the Young Friends of the Public Garden, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and Combined Jewish Philanthropies.
