Mission: The mission of the Police Department is Neighborhood Policing. The Department dedicates itself to work in partnership with the community to fight crime, reduce fear, and improve the quality of life in Boston's neighborhoods.

  • City of Boston Goals in 2012
Between January and March of 2012, the Boston Police Department (BPD) increased the number of Neighborhood Watch groups by 40, swiftly moving us towards the Mayor’s goal of adding 100 new groups this year. During that same time period, we carried out 46,320 neighborhood walking and bicycle beats, moving us closer to our goal of 200,000 in 2012.
  • Part I Crime Down in Third Quarter
The BPD tracks and reports crime data on a calendar year (Jan. thru Dec.) rather than on City Hall’s fiscal year (July thru June). Based on preliminary data for the calendar year-to-date (January – March 2012), in comparison to the same time period in 2011, the City of Boston experienced a 5% reduction in Total Part I crime.
  • BPD Launches “Tweet from the Beat”
The BPD recently launched a new program called Tweet from the Beat, which consists of participating Command Staff utilizing the existing Boston Police Twitter account to communicate with community members via ‘tweets’ during the course of assigned walking beats throughout identified communities.
